Historic Charles Street & the Mount Vernon Cultural District are located just north of the city center at the highest point in Baltimore. Here you will find the internationally renowned Walters Art Museum, the Peabody Conservatory (1857), the Baltimore Basilica - a national landmark which has hosted Pope John Paul II and Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, the Lyric Opera House (1894), Center Stage Professional Theater Company, and the Enoch Pratt Free Library (1882). In 1829, the first memorial honoring our first president, George Washington, was built here. The Washington Monument still stands on North Charles Street in the beautiful area now known as Mount Vernon Square. The Charles Street/Mount Vernon area also has many fine restaurants, shops, and nightclubs.
